What fails
Hints like “mom’s birthday” written on the same card as the seed, or a full passphrase stored in a password manager the spouse cannot unlock. Both patterns show up often in first visits.
What we write instead
Hints that point to a sealed source: “Passphrase packet B at the notary,” or “Second line of the letter in the bank box.” The hint belongs on the inheritance map; the passphrase belongs where the seed already lives under seal.
Dry-run proof
During recovery-preparedness practice we watch whether the secondary holder can locate the hint’s target within a few minutes. If they cannot, the map changes before anyone leaves the office.
